In this article I’m going to share with you key important misconceptions around success and then give you some real ways of thinking that allow you to get closer to “success”.
There are so many cliché sayings that we’ve been brought up on around work and life that simply aren’t true yet they control our thinking and the way that we relate in the world. And we need to be aware of them, clear them, and then insert a more realistic way of thinking that promotes our vision of the world.
#1 Practice Make Perfect
This is undoubtedly one of the worst lies that we are told. Practice does not make perfect. Why, because if you practice the wrong way then you’re damaging and hurting yourself. You can practice your golf swing 8 hours a day however, if you’re practicing the wrong way then your game won’t get better because all the techniques are wrong. In order to get better at something you have to do the right things. We’ve all heard the saying that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. It’s the same with anything in life. If you do the same wrong thing over and over again in practice then you’re not going to get any better. You’re just going to ingrain the wrong way of being and interacting in the world. You’ll stagnant and it will become harder to release your bad habits and tendencies to replace them with better ones.
#2 More experience and more time will make you better and get you there.
False. We hear this all the time in life, business, or relationships. We say things like, “Time heals all wounds,” or “You’ll get better at it eventually just keep practicing.” These are lies. More experience and time won’t help you. Those will only help you under the assumption that you’re looking out for mistakes and errors and that you’ll correct those errors. Firstly, you can only realize when you’re making a mistake or error when you get feedback. If you have no system in place to get feedback then you don’t even know what to correct. Time and experience only make you better if you yourself are looking how to get better and that start with getting feedback and then correcting according to that feedback. Saying that more experience and time will make you better is like saying that you can go down the wrong road and the longer you drive the closer you get to your destination. It doesn’t matter how long you drive at that point. You’re going down the wrong road. You need to turn around and figure out the right direction and actions to get you to where you want to be. A business that has been operating for twenty years can be doing the wrong things for 20 years and a business that does all the right things for one year will outperform and do better then the business that's been in operation for 20. We think that time is some magical wand that we can wave that will make all things better. It won’t. Right action and behavior make things better. If you’re assuming that a person will learn to take right action and behavior over time then yes time will make it better. But time isn’t making it better. Right action is. So whatever it may be that you’re doing. Getting into a relationship. Starting a business. Ask yourself this one question, “Are the actions that I’m taking working to make my life better?” That’s all you have to ever ask in anything. You don’t have to get caught up in the mind with a bunch of other questions and confuse yourself. Keep it as simple as you can.
#3 I just need to know how to do this.
The how to should come second. And it’s not the most important part of being successful. It’s the want to. How bad do you want it? Remember those times when you’ve been in love with a person and even though you were tired you still made the effort to be close to them by driving late at night or talking on the phone up late into the night. Your being wanted to be there, and it wanted to be there bad. So it’s not just about how to do it first you need to answer why do you want it. The why should come first because when that comes first then the how will follow. If you want it bad enough then you will figure out the how. And if you don’t want it bad enough then choose something else.
Deepest Pranams.
