Have you ever seen people who seem to meet and match all their goals with seemingly relative ease? It’s like whatever they do they make it seem so simple and easy. For years I found myself asking the same question. How do they do it?
Meeting goals isn’t nearly as hard to do as we think it has to be. It’s actually quite simple. It’s just that we go about thinking it in the wrong way.
In this article I’m going to share with you how we think about goals traditionally and why that hurts us, and then I’m going to share with you how to redefine your goals in a simpler way to keep you from getting anxiety or overwhelm.
Whenever we start thinking about a new goal or orientation for our life we start going into this endless realm of possibilities of what could be. This can be overwhelming and anxiety inducing. Yet, at the same time can be very exciting as we open up to new explorations and possibilities. Sometimes when we open up to this cave of unexplored ideas and possibilities we get overwhelmed and because of that we don’t even start. The possibilities are too endless and big and just thinking about it keeps us from even starting.
This is where most people get stuck and never leave. And this is because we’ve been conditioned by media and other forms of entertainment about people just like us who started small or poor or broke and then had one great idea standing on top of a mountain or building overlooking everything and contemplating the meaning of their life. And then everything shifts. It hardly works like that.
The reality of it is we think about this new idea for months maybe years, some people die with it and we never take action because we’re overwhelmed by the pressure of accomplishing such a huge task. We’re afraid of living up to this monumental vision. That’s when we need to say, “Fuck the vision,” and get clear and concise about the next immediate small action that we can take. You see this is how life and success actually work.
Traditional wisdom says, “Focus on the vision you want to create. Have it in front of you all the time.” This isn’t what you want. This is actually the worst thing you could do to yourself. Your vision needs to be in the background but what always need to be at the forefront of your mind is the next small action you can take that brings you closer to a goal. All of life happens in small increments. Think about it. Your relationship with your significant other first started with a small conversation. Your business first started with a conversation. Everything that ever happens in life starts out small. The first brick to your house. The first word in a relationship or business deal. That’s why you need to focus on the next small action you can take. It’s not overwhelming at all. It’s just a small step.
Our culture upholds these heroes, I’m thinking of Anthony Robbins, Elion Musk, and other iconic figures and we think that we have to accomplish these great things or at least come close. It’s good to look up to people and be inspired but also realize that every person whoever did something significant and worthwhile and met their goals spent years getting there. Focus on the small micro-step that you need to take to get closer. Focus on the little steps every day. The little actions that you can take now that can propel you to a bigger place. Continue to do that day in and day out and eventually you’ll be in a place where you have no idea how you got there.
People who create a lot and change a lot in this world and meet all there goals don’t think big. They have the big vision in the background but they spend most of there time thinking very small. It’s micromovements that bring us to where we need to be. What is the next small step you can take today that will bring you one step closer to your vision?
When it comes to goal setting and then actually accomplishing your goals be specific and concise. Make two categories, long-term goals and short-term goals. Divide it into four categories.
When you do this you’re able to see what it is that you want in the long-term, short-term, and what actions you need to take to get you there.
Deepest Blessings and Pranams.
