Ever wonder where how some people can seem to achieve so much so quickly? Ever wonder how some people can see so deeply into everything around them, and because of this they know exactly what to do?
In this article I’m going to share with you how we traditionally think about things from a linear model, then I will share with you how to think in a way that will bring you success in life, the systems thinking way. I will share with you how to think about the way you are thinking. Why is this important? Because it allows us to see the barriers that we’ve placed upon our mind. It allows us to see the mental tracks that define our thinking. If you can learn to think outside of your own pre-established thought patterns then you will always progress and evolve at a very quick rate. It’s good to question your own thinking.
Traditionally, many people think one dimensionally. They use linear thought patterns in all aspects of their lives, whether it’s making money, conducting relationships, or coming to a conclusion in academia. They tell themselves, “OK, if I put in x amount I get x amount back.”
And they think this way about everything. It’s black and white, up and down, all or nothing thinking. The worst type of thinking you can have. People think in dualistic terms. The best thing you can do is to think in degree terms. What do I mean by degree?
If you think in dualistic terms you drastically cut out the subtle things of life that make it enjoyable. If you only think in all or nothing terms then you miss all the amazing varieties that those two colors have to offer. You miss so much possibility and opportunity. This is what people do in their lives all the time. They don’t make room for the subtle things of life and all the varying shades it has to offer.
Systems thinking is a way to see the interconnectedness of all things in all directions. It’s not just forward or back, how most people think, even when pertaining to their own lives. It’s systematic. All encompassing. Let me give you an example to make this clear.
In my work I hear people say all the time, “I feel like I’m moving backwards. I don’t understand. I’m doing all this work and I feel like I’m going in circles or not moving." This is an understandable statement if you’re thinking in a linear way. However, when you look at it from a systems view of thinking everything changes.
It may feel like you’re moving backwards temporarily. And in some sense, you are. With any bit of integration work you have to go back to the past and collect all pieces of yourself that you may have left there. However, when you slow down and take these couple steps back and integrate that past part of you whether it be an old thought pattern that you’re releasing around a memory or an emotional pattern you’re really jumpstarting your way into a better future.
For example.
Let’s say you have an average car that you’re driving from your home in Germany to your family’s house who is two hours away. You can take the Audobon so you know that you can go as fast as you want however your car only allows you to go 80 miles per hour. Now, let’s say an hour into the trip your friend calls you up and says, “Hey, you can take my Ferrari for the weekend.” But your friend is 10 minutes in the opposite direction. If you turn around to go back and get the upgrade then you can high tail it out of there and make it to your family’s home in 30 minutes now instead of the remaining one hour.
From a linear perspective, you slowed down, even stopped, and went in the opposite direction. However, from a systems perspective that takes into account all variables in all directions you just gained way more momentum that will propel you much further.
Systems thinking allows you to see that when you take one action forward in a certain direction you then create a ripple effect all around you that effects things you didn’t even know about. And these effects can come back and will come back to effect you in the future and will add up over time.
For instance, let’s say you thank your friend for allowing you to use the sports car. And then he says, “Sure, every time you come out this way stop on by and use it to go wherever you want.” Now, you have a way to go wherever you want in that area, 2x as fast all the time. And that will add up over time.
When we think purely linearly, or just simply give and take we don’t think about the long-term effects of our actions and the consequences. We react to the immediate situation at hand. However, every action we take has an immediate effect in the long-run that ripples out that we may not see for a long time.
I’ll give you another example.
Let’s say that you take all the time to meet with a potential client. You spend a lot of time and energy with this person and you drive really far to meet with them. It’s a likely prospect, you make a good impression on them, and you really change their life for the two hours that you meet with them. However in the end they say no. Now, in that situation you could react and get disappointed or upset. However, you don’t know the effects of your actions. For all you know you made such a big impact on that person that that person tells at least five of their friends and a month, 6 months, or a year later one or two of those friends reach out to you. This is systems thinking at work. You may have not got the initial linear intention. However, that meeting produced for you in the long-run two clients because you made such an impression on the person who said no.
If you’re making a lot of decisions and choices then don’t go the way you want don’t get discouraged. You’re making an impact in ways that you cannot imagine which will return to you.
