Have you ever asked yourself, “I’m making it further along the spiritual path yet some of the things that come up seem to be so dark I feel like I’m getting worse? If I’m evolving spiritually why does it seem at times that I’m becoming worse? More angry, fearful, anxious, stressed?”

Many people are confused by the spiritual awakening process. We think. I need to “work” on being a better person. I need to “work” on being more loving. I need to “work” on being less angry and more happy. This is the incorrect way to think about things. I will blow away this whole conceptualization later.

In this article I will go into the nature of spiritual awakening as it relates to the consciousness, subconscious, and super consciousness. You see all of them exist within us and all of them flow through us. Depending on where we are within the awakening process determines which level plays out through our existence.

The conscious is that first layer. It is who we think ourselves to be. Our name, our society, our job. It handles the day to day local affairs that allow us to live within the world with ease. The subconscious is that deeper aspect of us. It’s that aspect that plays out, our unconscious desires. The things that society doesn’t accept as being proper.

How do these two interact and play out? Well you see, if you were to grow up in a society that just totally allowed whatever it wanted to come through then you would be in touch with your subconscious. It wouldn’t even exist because it’s allowed to play out. The subconscious are those deep parts of us the desires, wants, and needs that don’t get played out because our societal conditioning doesn’t allow it. I’ll give you an example.

Let’s say you were a man born in the 1950’s and you were gay. You had this subconscious desire but your society didn’t allow you to act it out. The environment forces you to repress this desire and it stays under your conscious awareness. So it goes into this area we call the subconscious. This desire will still play out. It has to, but it will now play out in an unconscious way. In order for that man to continue to live in the world without acknowledging the pain of having to suppress his true being he will most likely turn to some “negative” self destructive behavior, such as drinking or using drugs or some other form of addiction. The addiction is there to cover up the unconscious desire.

Every time the desire comes up and wants to be expressed or acknowledged the man, due to his societal constraints, has to shut that part of him down. And how he shuts that down is by using something on the outside as a distraction.

This is happening all the time in the world. Addictions and cravings of all types are these things that are beings have adopted to avoid are truest deepest desires because we weren’t allowed to go after them fully, either as a child due to the family we grew up in, or as an adult due to the conditioning of our society. We haven’t given ourselves permission to go after what we truly want and we’re still waiting for someone to come along and give us permission to allow the deeper aspects of the psyche to come through. This is why many people during a phase within their spiritual awakening have cravings and addictions. Theses addictions have been there from the beginning to cover up our deepest desires and wants and as we awaken they play out and our clearing out of our being so we can act on our deeper desires. So we can make the subconscious conscious.

This is why the awakening process can be confusing at times because your actually just traveling back deeper into yourself. You may at times think, “I’m getting worse it seems.” This is because you’re going into the shadow that has always been there you just suppressed it. You’re traveling back through your own consciousness and allowing those repressed “dark” parts to finally show.

The reason why they appear as bad is because they’ve been shoved down into a small box and hidden. You’d be pretty pissed and angry too if that were you right?

You see we have the wrong type of thinking about how to be a better person. About how to become stronger or more effective in the world. You don’t become a better person by adding things onto you. You don’t say, “I want to be a better person so I will start to practice becoming better.” That’s not how it works. You simply just let go. You’re already a perfectly beautiful human being full of bliss. This is your natural state. The Buddha state filled with compassion and mercy and all the amazing saint like qualities that one may strive for. You don’t have to strive for them they are already there. You must let go of the things that are covering it up. And this is what’s happening in spiritual evolution. You’re really just allowing all the things of the world and society to fall away. When these fall away then you can see and be your true being.

The super consciousness is that deepest aspect of you and your society and the world. It is the level at which we are all connected and there is no separation. It is the mythical realm where the human species believes in and has created the mythical archetypes.

These archetypes still exist within the world today and play out on a daily basis. Many successful writers use archetypes in their stories because they’re universally recognized by all peoples. The archetypes that exist within the super consciousness are not conditioned by individual societies and their stories. They’re characters and frameworks of human experience that all humans can relate to. George Lucas used archetypes figures when he made Star Wars. This is one of the reasons why it was so successful. You have the young hero, Luke Skywalker, you have the rebel, Han Solo, you have the Ruler, Darth Vader and the Emperor. These characters aren’t who we truly are. In reality they just come through us and play out.

So you see spiritual evolution is just coming back into yourself. It’s making its way from the conscious back to the super consciousness where everything is connected to Source. Your evolution is more of an involution. As we evolve externally we allow what wants to come through or play out internally.

As you become more conscious as a being you take back more power and you can play any of the roles that you need to in any given moment. You can be the Sage, the all knowing wise guy, you can be the rebel, the magician. As I get deeper into myself and allow deeper aspects of me to play out I notice that I play all roles at times. Waking back up to the super consciousness and allowing it to come forward will allow you to become a force within the world because you can play any character necessary to any situation. It’s not about being dishonest or not being who you truly are it’s actually just about being who you are at the deepest level. And who you really are at the deepest level is not just one character. That can easily be recognized. You are multifaceted.

Deepest Blessings and Pranamams to you!
