Do you find yourself attracted to pleasure and running from pain? Is pain something you see as bad and pleasure as good? Is your desire for pleasure and aversion to pain keeping you from getting to your goals?
In this article I will share with you why you must arise out of the pain pleasure dynamic, the purpose of pain and pleasure in our lives, and finally how to get out of it so that you may experience deeper feeling states such as bliss and ecstasy and master your life.
Pain, simply put, hurts. Naturally, we don’t like to feel it. It’s uncomfortable in the body and mind. Pleasure, is wonderful. We relish it and want more of it.
However, if your caught in this dynamic where you run from pain and run towards pleasure then you are a slave. You’re a slave to your own tendencies. Many of the things that are setup in this world are setup for you to minimize pain and maximize pleasure. Much of the market in America assumes you are running from pain and embracing pleasure. Think of all the medications we have to suppress pain. Think of all the products and drugs we have to maximize pleasure. If you stay within this dynamic then you will always be pulled and conditioned by the outside world.
Please see that true freedom is the ability to consciously act. It is the ability to exercise CHOICE! Slavery, is feeling like you “must have” something. We only feel these ways when we lack something within us. Have you seen people who are anxious or cannot wait for something new to come out?
Their minds go crazy as they await the next episode of a TV show to come out. Their minds go bonkers when they wait for that next album or product to be released. In this moment you are not in control of your mind or state of being. The outside world is and it has conditioned you to not be happy or content until you have that thing.
Pain and pleasure work the same way. As soon as we feel a slight discomfort or unpleasantness in the body we want to find a solution. We want to find a quick fix to make us feel better, to forget the pain and find pleasure.
Because you have this mindset or this way of conditioning then you go about in the world only going after things that you believe will give you pleasure. Where your mind suspects there may be pain, pain in the form of physical pain or emotional pain like rejection, then you run the other way. You want your own safe and comfortable space.
Please see how this limits your life. You are a slave to the world when you only try to avoid pain and embrace pleasure. Some people who only want pleasure get caught up in addictions of various sorts from drugs to alcohol to sex. Where is your power when these things rule you? You don’t have any personal power. You give it away to the things that help you chase after pleasure and avoid pain.
Pain and pleasure are both experiences within the body. One should not be held higher than the other. They are both things to be experienced and embraced. And ironically, the two polarities are interdependent upon one another. If you know great pain then you also know great pleasure.
One should not be preferred and the other rejected. They should both just be experiences that we allow to rise up within our body. When you don’t chase after pleasure, and when you don’t wish to avoid pain a whole new sensation can arise within the body, and this is known as bliss.
The experience of bliss is an interesting phenomenon because it can be experienced during states of great pain but also great pleasure. Bliss, or attaining the constant awareness of the bliss body, known by the yogis gives you ultimate freedom in this life. Because when you can learn to be completely blissful within yourself then nothing can touch you. You don’t desire to run after or seek things and you are not scared of anything knocking you out of that state. Attaining a state of bliss, beyond pleasure and beyond pain gives you ultimate freedom and power because no matter what happens on your external world you can remain steady and ecstatic within yourself.
Many of the times we don’t have control over the external world. There are so many variables that come into play in how our external world plays out. However, our internal world is within our control and we choose to take our power over it.
When you have power over your internal world, which begins with not running from pain and not being desirable of pleasure, when you can hold a healthy state of detachment from both of these things, then you can enter into states of bliss. Bliss lies right on the other side of pain and pleasure. Imagine how differently your life would be if you consciously chose to embrace both pain and pleasure whenever it arises instead of avoiding or chasing. What new experiences could you have?
Now, if your still caught in the pain versus pleasure dynamic how do you rise above it? You have to consciously choose to act against your tendencies. Remember as energy beings we are energetic patterns.
So in order to develop new tendencies or patterns you have to act against the old ones. That means take every opportunity when it arises to embrace pain and pleasure when it arises. Hold them together on equal ground within your mind. You can do certain practices everyday that help you get into this state more and more.
For example, it may feel good to put the hot shower on during a cold morning. Your body relaxes and you think to yourself, “Man I wish I could just stay in here forever.” That’s when you know you need to retrain your mind. As soon as I start to get real comfortable and I indulge in that pleasantness for a bit then I do the exact opposite. I put the water to as cold as it can go. It’s absolutely freezing cold and at first I want to get out but then I embrace it. I notice the sensations and embrace them fully and stand with the freezing coldness until I feel like it no longer is something that I want to avoid. Then I get out of the shower and I feel much better. Alert, yet relaxed and calm in the body.
Doing everyday little things like this will help you to retrain your energies to embrace discomfort and not view it as something undesirable. When you do this you will begin to take back your power and you will find that things that used to be able to influence you won’t influence you as much anymore.
Deepest Blessings and Pranamams!
