In this article I’am going to talk about what a solar eclipse is, where you can go to see it, and what it is going to do to us on a subtle level.

There are two different types of eclipses. The first one is called a lunar eclipse and is less rare then the latter a solar eclipse. A lunar eclipse happens when the earth comes between the moon and the sun. The shadow of the earth blocks the rays from the Sun that shine onto the moon. Thus we see the moon slowly start to disappear. However, a solar eclipse is where the moon comes between the Sun and the earth. For some people, who are in what’s called the “band of totality”, they will be able to witness the entirety of the eclipse. Meaning that the sun will be blocked entirely by the moon casting complete darkness onto that region. This region however is very small, 70 miles wide to be exact. One town known as Hopkinsville Kentucky will be darkest for the longest as it will see 2 minutes and 40 seconds of complete darkness. It’s home to about 32,000 people but is expected to have at least 100,000 people during the eclipse. The next solar eclipse won’t happen until April of 2024.

A solar eclipse is a rare event that allows the dark to come out and play for a bit. Eclipses signify great change. They signify points of closure and points of opening up in our lives.

Think about a cap being put on a bottle. Something is being closed, but then when the cap comes off something is reopened. An eclipse marks a point of transition in our life. However, there is much more happening on the subtle level then way may realize.

A solar eclipse is a time when the negative subtle forces of the world can come out and play a little more. Within the ayurvedic system of thought the universe is comprised of three basic principles: Sattva, Raja, and Tama. All things that make up the universe can be found in one of these “flavors”.

Sattva represents purity and knowledge. A man who has much sattva within him lives in service to society with no expectation of reward. Raja is action and passion. This man lives more for personal gain and achievement. And finally there is Tama. Tama is ignorance and inertia. It is a state of unchangliness. There is little growth or change. During an eclipse the energies of Raja and Tama are magnified and the darker self serving energies from the subtle realm play through humans. It is important to understand here first that we are not just a human with one soul or spirit and this spirit never gets tainted. But rather we are a soul having a temporary human experience who allows various spirits to come through us all the time.

Everyone is spiritual. And we are always embodying different spirits based off of what we are consuming such as food or emotions. Everything has a “spirit” to it. Spirits come through us all the time.

Under the Christian worldview many think that they are only under the power of the Holy Spirit but don’t realize that the morning zest they receive from their coffee is the spirit from the coffee beans working through them. All livings things have a spirit and are made up of a culmination of different spirits. This concept is important to understand when understanding what happens at the subtle level of reality during an eclipse. During this period the subtle forces of Raja and Tama come down from the subtle level and play out through humans at the physical level. This is why you may feel moody, drowned in negative emotions, or lethargic. Perhaps, old addictive patterns come and play out. This is because the subtle energy that charges the experiences in the physical is more prevalent then usual.

The larger play of the cosmos affects us humans directly. For instance, during the full moon there is an influx of energy at the subtle level which causes people natural tendencies to wind up. This is where we get the word loony from, or lunar.

During a full lunar moon the subtle energy running through the human system is at its highest and therefore if a person tends to act a little mentally imbalanced normally then during times of a full lunar moon they will seem completely loony.

However, there are also energetic changes that occur on the internal level.

Our digestive power is weakened so it is best to eat light and may animals sleep longer and go within. It is a time to go deep within and take it easy on the outside world. Any spiritual practice is greatly enhanced during an eclipse. Do yoga and meditation and you will feel like it’s been the best sessions of your life.

Stick around for part 2 where I go into the mythologies and old beliefs about eclipses, what people thought they were and what they meant and how they affected the world in ancient times.
