Observing Silence

In this article I'am going to explain the concept of observing silence and how applying this method in your own life at least once a week can profoundly change the way you interact with yourself and the way you interact with the world.
Observing silence means taking either a day or a week or however long you wish to not speak. To many this may sound silly but it has a profound effect on your consciousness. In some retreats, like Vipassana meditation retreats, people will not speak for 10 days. If you think this is hard there are some buddhist monks who go on retreat for years. They pack all their things and go away from society to live alone and be with their own being. The purpose of observing silence is to give less energy to our mind's thoughts. Simply put, our minds create thoughts and this is where our words stem from. When we take the time to not speak we begin to notice our reactions to the environment. For instance, many of the times when something external happens we react to it in an unconscious manner. Unconscious meaning that we simply just act in a pre
stablished way that hasn't been thought through consciously but rather is just a past reaction. A simple example would be when someone at a party drops a cup of liquid or plate of food and various people yell party foul. They heard it somewhere else and now are unconsciously repeating the same behavior without thinking about why they're doing it. It is simply just a reaction that gives them a kick.
This habit will also affect other people.
We are always communicating. In the physical we speak to one another but in the thoughts we are always communicating as well. We just don't realize it. When people are around someone who doesn't speak they suddenly become aware of their unconscious reactions about public communication.
For instance, maybe they get an awkward feeling when walking with someone but not speaking. They will be forced to become aware of this feeling and learn to be content with silence. When we observe silence we realize all the times that we make comments or speak without thinking. Suddenly, it's like someone puts a chain on our habitual reactions. Surprisingly, speaking takes up a lot of our energy. And many of the times when we speak it isn't necessary.
Alot of conversation revolves around useless matters or people just trying to distract themselves from something. When you observe silence your energies no longer go outward but rather they go inward. Instead of your awareness being shuffled outside of yourself you go internal. It is simple, what you focus on naturally expands. Where you place your focus is where your energies naturally flow too.
If you want to change something in your life then you do one of two things. One, you simply ignore it or two you focus on the thing that you want to change into. When you observe silence your able to focus on your thoughts and reactions. Essentially, your taking the power back into your own hands because your becoming aware of your reactionary self. Your reactionary self is a product of the past. It is a creation of all the past ways you have interacted with the environment, people, and yourself. Observing silence is a simply yet powerful way that allows you to change yourself and surprisingly
the people around you. It may be inconvenient for other people, and at times for yourself, but if you want to give your mind a shock, your speech a break, and your past self a slashing or two then I recommend taking one day of silence a week. Make it a day where you don't have to interact with people. For instance, most people on Sunday's don't have to interact with anyone. You can make it a Sabbath. Other people might not like your decision but they cannot do anything about it and they will have to respect it. Furthermore, if they're people worth having in your life then they will be proud of your evolutionary decision and promote it not put it down.
