In this article I'am going to describe the law of karma, its misconceptions, and also the different kinds of karma that we gain and drop. The concept of karma can be found in Buddhism, Janism, Hinduism, and Christianity. Basically, it is the, "As you Sow, so shall you Reap" concept.

The law of Karma is a ruling principle of the universe that cannot be changed. You cannot get around it whatsoever. Things in the universe do not happen randomly. They happen one after the other and in perfect succession. This is the order of karma. Every action and thought has a consequence and bears a certain type of fruit. Bad actions, whether done consciously or unconsciously will have negative results and good actions done consciously or unconsciously will have positive results. However, the fruits of karma may not be seen right away. Your actions, whether in thought or deed, are the seeds of your karma and the results are their fruits.

Every action has a threefold effect. Firstly, an action produces a fruit. This affects your character too because the action will leave an impression in your mind which will then urge you to do the same act again. And finally an action produces an effect in the world.

Just as an apple seed can only produce an apple tree so can only a evil action produce a result of pain and suffering. A virtuous action results in pleasure and happiness. Your actions in the past are responsible for your present condition. Thought moulds your character and who you become.

Virtually everything in the modern world today from our cars to our houses to the things that wrap our foods all existed in the human mind before manifesting in the physical. This is the power of thought.

The basis of your destiny goes as such. You so an action you reap a habit. You so a habit and you reap a character. You reap a character and you build a destiny. Destiny isn't some far off thing that you flow down into like water does a crevice. It's something that you are shaping in each and every moment.

Now, there are three kinds of Karmas. First, there is Sanchita which is just your accumalated works up to the present. It is the character of a man up to this point. It is his capacities, tendencies, and inclinations. Prarabdha is that portion of the past Karma which is responsible for the present body. It is the level of karma only on the present incarnation. This karma cannot be avoided or changed. It must be experienced and exhausted. You have to pay your past debts. And finally there is Kriyamana Karma which is the karma that you are building now but which will bear fruit in the future.

To better understand the three different Karmas I'll give you an example from the Vedanta. There is a bowman with a quiver on his back filled with arrows. He has already shot one arrow but he cannot remember. He is about to shoot another arrow. The bundle of arrows on his back is Sanchita, the arrow he has shot is Prarabdha, and the one he is about to shoot is Kriyamana. He has perfect control over Sanchita and Kriyamana but he has to work Prarabdha. The past which has begun to take effect he has to experience.
