In this article I'am going to explain to you what Metapsychiatry is, how it is useful and why it's important that you know about it, and then give you some exercises on how to apply the principles of Metapsychiatry to yourself so you can better understand your life path and rule out confusion you may be experiencing within your psyche.
We have all heard of psychiatry. People usually see a shrink or therapist when they are experiencing anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, or any other "negative" feelings that aren't pleasant to experience. Usually a session goes rather quickly. You explain your symptoms to your psychiatrist and he then diagnoses you with an illness and prescribes a medication. If your visiting a counselor then you may take approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT. In this approach you focus in on reoccurring thoughts that are no longer serving you or are unpleasant and you instead replace them with newer helpful thoughts that promote wellness.
Eventually, the new thoughts "stick" and replace the old ones and you consciously formed a new belief system. In my experience this has been a semi-effective approach.
However, there other approaches in dealing with negative thoughts and emotions. While mainstream psychology acts to replace old belief systems with newer ones, and psychiatry uses pharmacological methods to change the way the brain and body function there is a field that transcends both of these methodologies. It's called Metapsychatria and it's extremely effective.
What is Metapsychiatry? Simply put, it is a technique or field that allows a person to reframe their "negative" symptoms and seeing the symptoms from a different angle.
Instead, of targeting "negative" thoughts and replacing them with better ones or numbing a person with drugs, the metapsychiatrist will look at the symptoms of a person, evaluate their thoughts on these symptoms, and then asses where there needs to be shift in values or where the person needs to change their relationship to their thought.
As humans it's easy for us to get myopic, or narrow-minded. We get trapped within our own minds reliving the same thoughts over and over again. The same thoughts create the same types of experiences though the outward forms may change. It takes us another pair of eyes to show us that sometimes we don't need to change our thoughts, but rather we need to change the way we relate to our thoughts. We need to see the overarching structure that holds those "negative" thoughts up.
Because many of the times all we need is a shift in perspective. We don't have to change the thoughts, we just have to change our relationship with the thoughts.
Sometimes, our being is changing on a level that the mind cannot understand. Sometimes, our values our shifting and our logical egoic mind isn't 100% aware of the conscious shift taking place. To make this clear all give you an example.
Let's say there is this guy who loves making money. His life energies go into his work which allow him to make alot of money. The more money he makes the happier he becomes. Then one day he sees an ad for a meditation retreat. He thinks to himself, "Hey what the hell, maybe I'll try this out. Afterall, I'am making so much money I have alot of free time on my hands." He goes to the meditation retreat and he is given the assignment to meditate 2x a day for one straight month. He follows the program strictly, not necessarily because he is so set on it, but rather he is bored of just doing the same old things to make money. He might rationalize to himself by saying, "I got nothing better to do with my time." Suddenly, three months down the road he finds himself no longer motivated to make money. He finds himself being inefficient at work, he gets tired easily, and he starts to become depressed. He doesn't understand what is happening to him so he starts reading more books on spirituality and meditation. He finds it interesting but still tries to do his work and make money. But nothing seems to be getting rid of the depressing. So he visits the psychiatrist and they say that he has a classic state of depression. They prescribe him some medication and send him off on his way. This is the wrong approach. They address the symptoms but not the shift in values.
A metapsychiatrist would see the man and shift his perspective on his thoughts. He would allow the man to see that his values are simply shifting and his mind is unaware of the shift that is taking place.
He went to a meditation retreat and had some deeper experiences. Because of this suddenly chasing materialistic things such as money no longer gave him the same beat to life. His interest was shifting from making money to spirituality. His subconscious was changing and his conscious was unaware of the shift. His feelings were telling him that he no longer enjoyed making money and was becoming more interested in deeper aspects of life. If he was aware of this shift he could've just simply thought to himself, "I don't enjoy focusing on making money anymore I think my life is taking a new route. I should follow this new passion." That thought would've aligned his feelings with his thoughts and their would be no problem. But because the psychiatrist said that he was depressed and just treated the symptoms the man thinks to himself that he is wrong and offtrack. Getting back on track would be feeling better and doing the same old things.
Metapsychiatry is an important field that is so needed in the world today. Human consciousness is changing and evolving all around the planet and fast. People's value systems are shifting and many do not know what is happening.
The old ways don't seem to cut it anymore but their conscious minds don't realize that there has simply just been a shift in underlying values. All one needs to do is see that their interests, likes, and preferences are changing. And this change is normal and should be accepted. The quicker we can identify the shift in our values and align our thoughts and actions with them the quicker we get out of the depression and slump.
Negative thoughts and emotions are sign markers to change your life. Your being wants to step into a new direction and you need to align your thoughts and emotions to this new direction.
Sometimes it's not our thoughts that need changing but rather the way we reflect on our thoughts, or the thoughts that we have about our thoughts. It is so useful because it allows us to identify the needs of the deeper aspects of our being. Our soul is calling for a shift and the subconscious is being reorganized and the conscious mind doesn't understand what is happening. It's like an earthquake. Plates below the earth's surface shift, a completely natural phenomenon, while above everything is chaotic and seems out of order.
So if your feeling down and depressed or in the slump about life you need to do two things right now. First, write down your thoughts about what you think is making you sad. Perhaps, you lost your job, or a relationship. Both of which are good reasons to feel depressed. Now shift your perspective. Instead of telling yourself that it's the end of your life as you know it and you want the old back change your perspective. Grieve what you need to grieve but see the situation from a new angle.
Maybe you lost a job but maybe you where no longer passionate about the job and you needed a change anyway you just couldn't leave it because of your security issues. Now life took the step for you and you can find a better one. Or maybe you were passionate about that job or person and it really does suck that they're gone. Grieve the loss and take the time you need and then tell yourself that something new and better is on its way. Whenever something leaves us in life whether it's a relationship or a job it opens up a space for opportunity. In order for new things to come in we first have to let go of the old and make space for the new.
What's coming is always better but we have to have the courage to release the old and recognize that our being and life is asking us to shift our values. The same old values patterns are no longer working. Begin to align yourself with the new self that is literally dying to emerge.
Secondly, write down the new things that you are becoming interested in or where this new being that is emerging wants to go. Imagine the new you coming forth. What is this new being asking for? What does it want? Where can you create more space to allow it to emerge? inner alignment with outer alignment.
When this happens you will start to feel happy and energetic again.
