Number 1: Toilet Paper.
Always have toilet paper on you, in your bag and in your pocket. Or baby wipes. Your body is in a different environment so it's adjusting and bathrooms at times can be very hard to find.
Number 2: A camera.
And not your phone camera. There are some amazing natural landscapes and cultural practices that you'll want to take snaps of. If you can buy a long distance lens as well. It's very much worth it as you will see animals such as monkeys doing very interesting things from afar.
Number 3: At least 6 extra copies of your passport and Visa.
These are a must. Many of the times to check into hostels or hotels and even to buy a sim card you have to give them a copy of your passport. Sometimes you'll have to give them the original if your renting something expensive like a scooter.
Number 4: Money. And I mean this in the sense that you should never leave one town or area with less then 10,000 ruppees in your pocket.
Why? Because ATM don't work at alot of places and you might find it hard to find quick cash, especially at night when your trying to find a place to stay. If worst comes to worst though know that there are other people who are on the track throughout India too and there are more than enough people who will lend you a helping hand. 1st world foreigners are always traveling throughout India and will always help you.
Number 5: A solar charger for your phone.
Suprisingly, outlets can be hard to find and you ll need to have an adapter. A solar charger allows you to charge your phone wherever you are. It's good to have your phone charged and ready wherever you are when your in a foreign country.
Number 6: Mapsme.
Mapsme is an awesome app that allows you to navigate and use direction, similiar to google maps except you don't have to use any of your data. So when you don't have a signal, which will happen alot in India, you don't have to worry about not getting to your destination. It will still navigate perfectly.
Number 7: An Indian Sim card.
You can buy these in the airport terminals so don't worry about getting one before. When you arrive in India simply switch out your network sim card with the Indian sim card. You'll have to make some calls to a number that the company will give you and it will be confusing but you'll eventually get it. I suggest buying Vodafone over any other carrier such as Idea. Vodafone has alot of network coverage throughout all of India.
Number 8: A water bottle that purifies water.
Pretty much wherever you travel to you'll be able to buy waterbottles. However, it is good to buy a water purifier bottle because in the case that you get lost out in the wilderness or in the mountains you won't get dehydrated.
Number 9: An extra SD card and flash drive for all of your data (pictures and videos).
If you enjoy photography and video editing like myself, then you'll want plenty of space to put the data on as well as maneuverability between all devices.
Number 10: A sense of openness mixed with a care free attitude.
India is a crazy place. Everything will go wrong and yet still get accomplished and done. It's constantly changing and everything happens so quickly. It's chaotic. The way it operates is beyond the mind. So if your a person who has thinks your plans are foolproof and that everything will happen the way you think it will. Be aware. It will not. However, I can guarantee you somehow you'll always get to where you need to be or get what you need. India operates above the planned mental plane. So many times I asked myself, "What am I going to do or how will I get through this or where am I going?" And then magically somehow everything works out in a way that my mind could've never thought.
