In this article I'am going to explain the concept of happiness and how our mind tricks us into thinking that acquiring certain things, whether they be material assets, relationships, or anything else you can obtain, will make you happy.
Furthermore, I'll explain the connection between happiness, needs, and growth and show you how temporary discontent is a necessary condition for our growth. In order to be happy we first have to understand the concept of happiness and states of being. For instance, you first have to realize and understand that your a being that has various needs on every level, physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Furthermore, you have to understand that how you think of happiness has to fall into one of these categories. And most importantly we have to acknowledge that we are always in the present moment. We only ever have the moment in front of us. This is the most vital aspect to remember because life happens in terms of present experience. Not in thought. For instance you may think one thing will make you feel a certain way all the time. Like a new relationship feels great when it first starts off but then when your patterns come out it no longer becomes enjoyable. Before you thought that the relationship would make you happy. In fact you thought that it would bring lasting eternal happiness. But it is just a brief external state. This is where states of being comes in.
Our existence and our enjoyment of existence depends on what needs we have fulfilled and how we approach the subject of happiness and contentment.
For instance, when your hungry you think in that moment I want food and that would make me happy. But once your stomach is satisfied your mind can think of more things that you want which can make you happier. I want a brand new car. And you can work towards and get a new car and then once you have that new car you will work to something else. In our modern culture we've been told that we need specific things to be happy. We've been suckered into believing lies such as fancy things, lots of money, and relationships will make us happy. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with any of these things or wanting them. Just know that your being set up. The setup is the promise that you'll be happy or fulfilled when these things are achieved or acquired. But it's critically important to see that when these things are achieved something else will replace it and you'll still want more because your state of being is in a state of perpetual want. People who wanted to make one million dollars and then achieved their goal then thought to themselves, "Hey let's go for 10 million I still feel the exact same way." Then they get there and they want 100 million and so on and so forth. It's a never ending rat race because happiness isn't in achieving things it's rather achieving a state of being.
Many people in the modern world ruin their bodies with drugs and alcohol to achieve the things they believe that will make them happy. That is, there mind tells them if you achieve this then you'll be happy.
But that thought will still be there after you make your first million or have your first, second, or third marriage. Happiness isn't something that you can achieve but rather it's a state of being. You train your body and mind to be content in all situations. You train your inner world to be happy, content, and peaceful despite what may be happening on the outside. This is happiness and in order to achieve this you must have a daily spiritual practice such as yoga, meditation, or tai chi. There is nothing wrong with setting external goals and trying to achieve them. Just don't set up your happiness, zest, or want of life on external achievements because external achievements may or may not happen no matter how hard we try. If you align your concept of happiness with these things then your placing yourself on a never ending hamster wheel. And the only way to step off is too realize that happiness isn't an accomplishment or something you can obtain. It's a state of being that is acquired by living a particular type of way. You can still be happy and have lots of money and other things too however you can be happy and have few things as well. Also, forget about being happy.
The more you think about trying to be happy the more you'll only miss your mark. This is because happiness is training yourself and your mind to be accepting and open to all of life's situations. It's a choice.
Ironically, once you forget about trying to be happy you'll start to realize that you have happier moments throughout the day. This is because when your happy you don't actually think or worry about being happy or not in the future. Just like when your hungry you don't think about being hungry or not in the future you YOU ARE SIMPLY HUNGRY. Your life is always happening NOW.......NOW........and NOW. Everything is right here and right now. You only ever live in this moment. When your state of being has been conditioned to think that happiness is somewhere out there in the future then you'll always be looking for it out there in the future. You'll always imagine that it's with someone else or with something else. And in that type of thinking you'll always miss the mark. Of course, there are certain things that do make you more happy. For instance, let us say you don't like your job anymore. You don't find it fulfilling. You should then quit and decide to take up work that is fulfilling. Why? Because this will make you happy. In this case it's not working towards something in the future to make you happy it's acknowledging to your present self that what it is presently doing isn't fulfilling or satisfying and now it needs to find something else that will make you feel fulfilled once again. Our beings are always changing. That is if we are healthy and in flow.
Evolution and change is the natural way of life and the universe. Things shrink and grow. Contract and expand.
So if you aren't happy with your present situation and feel like you are not happy then it's important to do two things. First, write down what you think is not making you happy. For instance, maybe you feel lonely and want a relationship. So you write down I'am not happy because I don't have a relationship. This is not true. You are not happy because you feel lonely not because you don't have a relationship. You just think that having a relationship will make you not feel lonely anymore. And it very well may for a short period of time until you find yourself away from that person and then you realize that in order to keep from experiencing that unpleasant feeling of loneliness you have to have them constantly around. Your well being becomes dependent upon their presence. That means they are like an inoculating drug to you and this is a state of dependence, of slavery, not freedom. True happiness and contentment comes from feeling fulfilled within oneself. And that can be achieved only by going inward and learning to be content with yourself and doing daily spiritual practices.
Secondly, acknowledge that happiness isn't some achieved state where we are always happy 100% of the time but rather it is based upon what needs we are having met and that are needs are always changing.
As spiritual beings living in meat suits we are always going to have fluctuations and times of discontent and contentedness. This is necessary for our growth. If we were 100% content and happy all the time then we would stay where we were at and not grow. Discontent usually arises when we began to understand and acknowledge that we have more needs then we previously realized. It's Maslow's hierarchy of needs. For instance, a man who has no food cannot think or focus on his emotional and spiritual needs. He may not even be aware or know that he needs those things. He simply just wants food. But then once his physical needs are taken care he realizes now that his emotions feel a certain way that is unpleasant. Once these are stabilized he will then be dissatisfied with his current state and yearn for something deeper though he may not know what that deeper thing is.
In today's modern world we have so many external distractions and things that keep us from being content in the now. Our energies are transfixed on the external world always looking for that next thing to "fulfill" us. But fulfillment isn't something that can come from the outside it is something that fills up from within. You become full or filled up.
