What is Yoga?

Many people in modern countries think that yoga is simply just a physical exercise or stretch. They imagine it to be something that you do so you feel better in your body and gain some flexibility.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Yoga is much more than a physical exercise. It is a science. A science that allows you to dissolve the boundaries of your mind. When done with the right intentions and with focus and awareness it can become a tool that you embody to change your very perception and the way you interact with existence.

Simply put, you are your awareness. Your body and it's physical sensations, your thoughts within the mind, and the emotions you experience all occur within your awareness. In mainstream science today the belief is that your brain is responsible for your consciousness and the way you perceive and interact with the world. They say that if the brain were to die then everything would just go blank and "you" would just be gone.

But the brain doesn't build consciousness it simply mediates it. It's like saying that the television show you are watching is made by the television. It's not the television mediates the program. If you were to fiddle with the television and cut some wires then the picture would go black but the program is still going.

Similarly, this is how consciousness works. Now, how does yoga affect consciousness. Yoga allows you to realize that you are connected with all of life. And the only boundaries that you believe you have are in your mind. The air you breathe comes from the trees. The food you eat comes from the land and builds your body. Simply put yoga allows you to reprogram your entire energy system. I've talked about the different bodies that make up the human system in another videos. What allows all these bodies to function is the energy flowing through them. How the energy flows through them determines your thoughts, emotions, states of consciousness, and the way you experience life. When you practice Yoga your are redirecting the way energy flows through the entire system. Thus, your experience of life is altered.

Think of the human body as an antenna to a television. You put it this way or that way and the picture gets clearer or fuzzier. You can get more access or less access to stations. With yoga, the real yoga that is, not just physical yoga, you can tune into whole other states of consciousness which give you access to whole other worlds that you could've never imagined.

There are many different forms of yoga. There is Hatha Yoga, which is the Yoga where you align your body with the whole of the cosmos. You do various physical exercises and positions to change the way your energy flows. There is also Bhakti Yoga which is Yoga of devotion. Devotion means being devoted to god or divinity or the creator in everything you do. You dedicate your life and breath to him and in all your actions. The end goal of everything you do is to bring you closer to god. Or perhaps I should say to allow you to remember your true identity and reunite yourself with divine source. Jhana Yoga is the yoga of knowledge. That means studying and pondering over various spiritual texts whatever the tradition may be it doesn't matter. The point is that you are contemplating the deeper side of life and seeing where you fit in within the grand scheme of the cosmos. There are many paths back to divine source. You can practice all of these or just one or two. Whatever your heart desires. You will notice that as you practice one your other yoga will flow more smoothly. That is because they complement one another. For instance, I can tell my Hatha Yoga practices flow with ease and flexibility when I have practiced some form of Bhakti that day. If I've volunteered somewhere I notice that I can get into certain asanas much easier and with less pain. My body feels better and is more agile.

Essentially yoga is about being on the spiritual path. And we are all on the spiritual path. It's just whether we recognize it or not. Maybe in this lifetime or another. All of life and everything that happens to us is about leading us back to divine source.

It's all about bringing us back to where we came from. The end to the beginning of the divine drama. Practicing yoga, whatever form it may be, will get you there much quicker. However, know that when you start practicing Yoga seriously, whatever form, with the intent to align yourself with the cosmos and bring you back to source, know that your life will change dramatically.
