In this article I will cover some signs and symptoms of the classic Kundalini Awakening Process.

This is going to be a three part series where I first go over signs and symptoms and what’s happening, remedies to make the process manageable, and then finally Pitfalls along the path.

The Kundalini energy is an energy that is stored within every human being. The energy is believed to lie dormant within the bottom vertebrae of the spine right by the perineum, the area between your anus and the genitals. There are many numbers of variables that can trigger this energy to come into action to start cleansing the organism. Some are:

  1. Serious Trauma

  2. Use of Drugs

  3. Shakti/Energetic Transfer by a Master

  4. Intense Spiritual Seeking

Some may have more gentle awakenings while others, like myself, can have incredibly violent awakenings that force the person to change their lifestyle and who they are. Generally, in my experience it seems that the more trauma that an organism has acquired the more violent the awakening. This is because trauma is stored within the cells of our body.

Our minds may forget events but the body never does.

For this reason, if you have had a lot of trauma of any kind the process may seem more intense because there are most likely repressed emotions and physical sensations that the kundalini energy will bring into your awareness. Speaking from a comfortability standpoint the less trauma the better and less arduous the journey. But speaking from a spiritual standpoint that views suffering as a means to developing compassion and empathy and other values it can be a good thing. In my own experience I can say that my mind and body had been wrecked from trauma by an abusive childhood and then from physical combat. This past made has made my kundalini experience in the present quite hard at times. But it hasn’t come without rewards. Furthermore, the polarities of experience concept really helps to put life’s pains and pleasures into a healthy realistic perspective.

So what are the signs and symptoms of a Kundalini Awakening?

This list is called the Kundalini awakening Scale Test developed by Bruce Greyson. He studied connections between people suffering from Kundalini experiences and patients who had been diagnosed as psychotic. The symptoms and descriptions of experiences are uncanny.

  1. Energetic Sensations around or within the body (tingling sensations or waves of hot or cold)

  2. Seeing of lights or mystical phenomena such as waves

  3. Uncontrolled physical movements (Hand mudras or spontaneous yoga postures)

  4. Loss of focus- little control over the mind (For this reason it might feel like you’re losing your mind and in part you are, the ego is dying)

  5. Emotional Upheaval

  6. Experiences of Bliss and Joy

  7. Unusual breathing patterns

  8. Clicking in the Ear (misdiagnosed as tinnitus)

  9. Feeling of unknown presence(s) around you

Your body is going through a lot changes because the energy increasing is causing your entire nervous system to rewire. Your being is essentially moving to a higher vibration so naturally there will be more physical, emotional, and mental changes occurring as well. To make room for the higher energies to flow through your being the older energies have to be released. When they release you experience them to their fullest.

Human beings are individuals but at the same time they’re connected to the environments that they exist within.

We become what we consume physically, mentally, and emotionally. Just as your body will become slow, weak, and dull if you consume fatty and high sugarey foods so will your mind and emotions become whatever they environment put into them. Our bodies the physical, mental, and emotional bodies are all energy transducers. You put something into them and something comes out. This is the basis for your whole existence. The Kundalini awakening experience is about releasing the energies that have been stuck within our bodies.

For instance, say you had an angry father growing up who yelled and physically abused you if you didn’t do what he said right away. To survive within this environment as a child you learned to keep him happy and not anger him. You suppressed your own emotions to survive within the environment and development a personality that acquiesces to any requests even if internally you don’t want to. This pattern repeats itself into your adult life and you grow tired on all levels because you don’t know how to say no to other people’s requests out of fear that the other person may be angry or upset with you. Instead of communicating your boundaries and needs and saying, “Hey I have other commitments I cannot do that for you now,” you agree to do favors for others at the expense of your health. When you have a kundalini energy you will dive into the emotion of fear that surrounded your ability to stand up for your own needs and interests. Perhaps, before kundalini awakening you were perceived by your parents and friends as someone who was always willing to do something or be there for the other person but now, since the kundalini awakening, you’re learning to draw appropriate boundaries. Your identity is shifting and others will see or feel the change is occurring.

You may have some fear that others will think that your selfish for drawing appropriate boundaries but in time as you learn to assert your needs and interests and other people will learn to adapt to the new you or they will leave your life.

Now what are some things you can do to help you feel like you have some control over your life throughout this process. Because so many internal changes are happening naturally there will be many external changes as well and you might begin to feel that you have no control over the experience. There will be times where you feel completely exhausted, you may have to quit your job or do part time work for a while. Doing some of the activities about to be mentioned will help restore a sense of peace and control to your life. But also know that if times you feel crazy, suicidal, depressed, and/or manic know that you are not alone and that this is completely normal. Like I said the old repressed is leaving and the new is flowing in.

  1. Spend time in nature and alone: At different stages during my awakening I felt the need to be alone with myself. It was as if my awareness was diving deep into my being and all my energy had to be focused on my internal world. If you find yourself feeling the need to be alone and away from friends know that this is perfectly normal. Explain to them what you’re going through, they don’t need to know everything just the fact that you need some time alone at times. If your friends are true friends and are supposed to be in your life than they will understand and give you what you need if you communicate. If they don’t listen or hear you then these relationship will more than likely end as the kundalini process continues.

  2. Take Epsom salt baths with baking Soda: If you played a lot of sports and did a lot of hard physical activity before your kundalini awakening then your body is going to start feeling into the permanent aches and sores. With the influx of energy your awareness is deepening. You will have days where your body feels heavy and/or beat up. The Epsom salt will help your skin to release toxins from the body and the baking soda will help to detoxify and alkalize the body. Red meats, dairy products, caffeine, and alcohol are all very acidic. The baking soda will help neutralize these effects.

  3. See a therapist: With a kundalini awakening in effect you will start blowing through your old patterns and karmas. This is affecting every level of your existence. To help cope with the changes, and to express and understand your experiences it will help to have someone else be present with you who isn’t caught in the drama of your life. You can share your kundalini experiences with them or not however If you choose to do so highly suggest that you choose someone who has a transpersonal understanding of psychology or who is aware of spiritual transformational processes. If they’re not aware and you tell someone about your experiences they might misdiagnose you as schizophrenic or psychotic. Here is a link to the Grof foundation. A foundation dedicated to help finding therapists for people who are aware of this process. http://spiritualemergence.info/Explain to your family that you’re going through a lot of internal changes and that you are changing at a rapid rate. You do not have to feel like you have to explain to them everything that is going on kundalini and mystical related however it helps to know that your family is aware that your going through a lot and if they’re in a place they can support you by any means necessary. At the same time this might not be possible as your kundalini may bring to the surface unhealthy patterns related to your family.

  4. Have bodywork done: As I explained earlier the body never forgets. The kundalini is working through the chakras but it’s also working through your bodily tissues. You can assist this energy if you have bodywork done. There are many forms of bodywork and some might be more effective for you than others. I tried everything from Rolfing to acupuncture to deep tissue massage to craniosacral fascia therapy. I still have yet to try myofascial release. I believe that the spontaneous movements, or kriyas, are started by the energy moving through the fascia system of the body. I’ll explain what fascia is in another video. Personally, I found Cranosacral fascia therapy to be the most effective for working with my kundalini. It’s been absolutely lifechanging. I believe that the myofascial release will have a similar effect. I you’ve had a lot of physical trauma I strongly suggest you get this work done. After physical trauma the body’s fascia system tightens up which clenches down on the organs, diaphragm, and lungs. This constricts breathing which can make one feel anxious and tight no matter how relaxed you may try to be. Having bodywork done that deals with the fascia can bring you to unknown states of relaxation. Furthermore, your productivity will increase.

  5. Start a spiritual practice: Whether it be yoga, meditation, or just standing out in nature and allowing the energy to move throughout your body, however it needs to. This is important. As you introduce new higher forms of habits into your life you will begin to increase the quality of your life as well as your own vitality.

  6. Remain Humble: You can read all the books you want about this experience, you can have many mystical experiences that few others will have if ever in this lifetime but you will still not know what to do or think in many of the situations. You will learn lessons and they can be both incredibly painful and blissful. Your mind may tell you that you got something or that you finally learned it but just know that something else will come along and challenge you. Life can be a constant process of learning, growing, and changing if you allow it. With Kundalini in your system you are now on the fast track. Step in line with your expansion with an attitude of being humble and curious. It will be scary and intimidating at times but this is just your being moving past the layers of fear and anxiety that we’ve been conditioned into by powers beyond our conscious experience.

Pitfalls along the path:

Addiction:

Addiction to spiritual experiences or certain states. Constantly trying to recreate an effect or feeling much like an addict.

Grandiosity:

Feelings, actions, and thoughts around yourself being the next Messiah incarnate. Many people hopped up on the higher energies feel themselves to be walking on another plane above all mere mortals. Be wary to not talk yourself up. Feel free to share your experiences or what you’re learning if you can do it in a very healthy way.
